AFFI Honor Guard Districts

The Associated Fire Fighters of Illinois Honor Guard is set-up in a para-military fashion. It consists of the Principal Commanders, a Training Division, and eight Districts.  These Districts are divided geographically, much the same way the Associated Fire Fighters of Illinois Districts are divided; except for the 8th District which is the Pipes and Drums. The 8th District is made up of Pipers and Drummers from across the entire state.  We train together, primarily within our geographical districts, for ease and continuity. We also use District personnel for points of contact during an activation within any District.

The Principal Commanders oversee all activities of the Honor Guard.  The Principal Commanders consist of the State Commander, the Northern Deputy State Commander, and the Southern Deputy State Commander. The State Commander reports directly to the President of the Associated Fire Fighters of Illinois. He is also responsible for coordinating and commanding all AFFI Honor Guard activities and events.  The State Commander is assisted by the two Deputy State Commanders.  If the State Commander is not available, one, or both, Deputy Commanders will act in his place.

The State Training Commander reports to the Principal Commanders and is responsible for training throughout the state.  Assisted by a First Shirt of Training, the Training Commander develops, organizes, and oversees training materials and sessions. It is his responsibility to ensure Honor Guard members are prepared to accomplish their duties in a proficient manner.

There are seven Districts divided geographically throughout the State.  Each District is led by a District Commander and assisted by a First Shirt. The District Commander reports to the Principal Commanders and serves as a point of contact for any LODD within their geographical region. Each District also has Drill Captains who deliver training to District members throughout the year.

District 8 is the Pipes and Drums. They are the only district that is not geographic; they cover the entire State. After members are inducted into the AFFI Honor Guard, they may attend District 8 trainings. Members must also continue to fulfill their home District training requirements. After the required amount of District 8 drills, members must demonstrate playing competency to be inducted into the District 8.

Trainings

All members must attend Convention and two trainings, or three trainings, throughout the year to remain active. If a member fails to make the training requirement, but wishes to remain on the roster, they must return their registration, with their $25 fee, to the AFFI Office.

There are multiple trainings in each District throughout the year. All trainings are posted on this page. Any active member may attend ANY District’s training. For example, if your Local is based in District 5, but you live close to District 4, you may attend their drills. Trainings sometimes change during the year, so please check this page regularly to make sure you don’t miss anything.

At the bottom of this page, there is a Google Calendar that you can have your events sync with your smart phone or Ipad. You may also sign-up for the Newsletter. This will assist in members being notified of any major drill announcements or activations. Please check this web site's home page for further updates, service announcements, and information if you have heard of an IL Union LODD.

District Commanders, First Shirts, or Drill Captains, please notify the Web Master for any updates or changes to your drill schedules.

Springfield Memorial Ceremony

The training the day before the annual Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial in Springfield counts as a drill. I have added that date to each of your Districts drill dates as a reminder to your District that they can attend that drill for credit.  The Memorial itself does NOT count as a dril.  It is the drill the day before ONLY that counts.

Training Requirements:

Prior to October 31st you must attend the folloing to go to the next year's convention:

Convention + 2 District Drills

No Convention = 3 District Drills

Please click and use the following for Drills:

If you have questions regarding your District drill, or eligibility to Convention please do NOT call the AFFI Office.  They will just direct you to your District Commanders.  Here are their e-mails:
